$50,000 FOR GOULBURN FLOOD MANAGEMENT
Environment Minister Robyn Parker and Goulburn MP Pru Goward today announced Goulburn Mulwaree Council would receive $50,000 for floodplain management.
Ms Goward said the funds would be used to install a flood warning system for Goulburn.
“The project involves the installation of gauges to allow for flood warning using real-time rainfall and river flow data,” Ms Goward said.
“The installation will be done in consultation with the Bureau of Meteorology and the Office of Water.”
Ms Parker said this was one of 60 recent new grants totalling $20.8 million awarded to local councils to plan for, and reduce risks and impacts of, flooding.
“Flooding in urban and rural NSW costs our economy about $250 million each year, as well as the severe emotional distress which can result,” Ms Parker said.
“Eligible councils will also be able to access a $1 million pool of funds for projects to purchase or raise properties that have been identified to be in areas of high flood risk.
“These funds come from the NSW Government’s Floodplain Management Program which aims to reduce the impacts of flooding on communities and to reduce private and public losses resulting from floods.
“Councils will also contribute their own funds to the projects – in most cases the NSW Government provides $2 for every $1 invested by councils.
“The NSW Government recognises the damage that flooding can cause and is proud to support councils with funds and expertise to help them prepare and minimise the risk to their communities.”
Minister Parker also announced that applications for grants from 2014/2015 round of the Floodplain Management Program would open on 7 March and close on 15 April 2014.
Funding is available to assist local councils and other eligible agencies to carry out Floodplain Management Projects, to assess risks and reduce impacts of flooding.
