DEVELOPMENT MILESTONE ACHIEVED AS NEW LANSDOWNE BRIDGE MOVES STEP CLOSER
Member for Goulburn Pru Goward has today advised the community that environmental impact assessment approvals for a new bridge on Bungonia Road across the Mulwaree River at Goulburn had been achieved.
This included gaining approvals from the Office of Environment and Heritage for the impact of the construction of the new bridge on neighbouring heritage properties.
Ms Goward said the Australian and NSW Governments are funding a replacement of the Lansdowne Bridge, with the old bridge expected to be removed later this year.
“The benefits of the new bridge include improved safety for all road users by providing wider lanes, improved road approaches and provision of a shared path across the bridge. It will also improve freight movements by providing access for higher mass limit vehicles.”
Recent work carried out includes utility preparation work onsite and geotechnical site investigations, which will be used to inform the final design for the replacement of the bridge.
Ms Goward said a final design for the new bridge is now being prepared, with construction work of the new bridge expected to start mid next year and be completed by mid-2019.
“A number of activities are underway to ensure work to demolish the old bridge can start this year. Work to relocate utilities, construct a crane pad and work platform on the water will be carried out before demolition work starts later this year,” Ms Goward said.
“Community feedback was considered in preparation of the concept design through the Review of Environmental Factors (REF) display, and a majority of the comments related to the closure of Forbes Street and support for a new bridge,” Ms Goward said.
The design of the new bridge will ensure that access to Forbes Street will remain open for motorists and the local community.
Ms Goward said detours remain in place for motorists which add around three minutes to journey times.
The community will be kept informed as the project progresses.
