Member for Goulburn Pru Goward thanked nurses living and working in the area for their continued commitment to care for the community.
The 12th of May is International Nurses Day and is also the birthday of the world’s most famous nurse, Florence Nightingale.
“It takes a special person to be a nurse or a midwife, which is why it is so important that we take the opportunity on this day to thank these hardworking women and men for their compassion, professionalism and round-the-clock commitment to caring for patients,” Ms Goward said.
“I am always struck by the selflessness and dedication of nurses and midwives, not just here in the Goulburn electorate, but across NSW.
“The strong economic performance of NSW under the Liberals and Nationals has given us the ability to boost our nursing workforce – something Labor couldn’t manage as it couldn’t manage the economy.
“Under the Liberals and Nationals we have delivered 2,274 additional frontline nurses and midwives and support staff to better serve the community.
NSW Health currently employs approximately 49,900 nurses, representing the single largest workforce group within NSW Health. (This figure does not include casual and agency nurses.)
“Every day nurses and midwives are faced with situations and challenges, hopefully many of us will never experience. They give selflessly providing not just treatment and assistance, but comfort and support to patients in need,” Ms Goward said.
“We should never take their contribution to our community for granted, and International Nurses Day is our opportunity to celebrate them and the lifesaving work they do.”
