WORLD’S GREATEST SHAVE 2017: A SHOUT-OUT TO THE COMMUNITY TO “GET SHAVING, AUSTRALIA!”

Pru Goward Member for Goulburn is encouraging locals to step up and support the participants who will shave, wax or colour their hair (and more than a few beards) for this year’s World’s Greatest Shave charity fundraising events.

The 2017 World’s Greatest Shave will be held from Thursday 16 to Sunday 19 March.

“Our own community members will soon be participating, by donating their hair for this very worthwhile cause,” Ms Goward said. “Their generous support will add to the more than $200 million raised across the country since the World’s Greatest Shave began almost twenty years ago.”

Held every year since 1998, the event raises funds for the Leukaemia Foundation of Australia, which uses the donations for research into leukaemias, lymphomas, myeloma and related blood disorders.

“Funds are also used to assist families affected by these cancers with accommodation and transport during treatment. It’s such a good reason to dig deep and support people living with these serious illnesses and their families,” Ms Goward said.

Leukaemia is cancer of the blood cells, which usually starts in the bone marrow. Although numbers have decreased over the past decade, it accounts for almost 2.7% of new cancer cases and is the most common cancer in children under the age of 15. Lymphomas include the two main types, Hodgkins and non-Hodgkins lymphoma (NHL), with NHL being the most common form, making up more than four percent of new cancers. Multiple myeloma is a cancer of the white blood cells.
In NSW, the Leukaemia Foundation provides accommodation in Newcastle, Waverton and Westmead, to meet the needs of some of the patients undergoing blood cancer treatment. While in the accommodation, patients receive support, advice and information, as well as transport to and from treatment centres.

The NSW Government also assists eligible patients through its Isolated Patients Travel and Accommodation Assistance Scheme, or IPTAAS, which provides subsidies towards the costs of their accommodation and travel.
